How to get started in testing when you do not have any previous experience

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Or to put it differently and in our context, the fact is that many companies are looking for junior testers with some testing experience, but then again how can you get that initial experience to get started in testing?

This vicious circle is both annoying and frustrating, especially for people who are on the wrong side of the experience wall.

So let’s go and explore how can testers get started in testing even if you do not have any practical experience in testing.

Look for companies that are looking for zero experience testers

  • consulting companies
  • large companies
  • outsourcing companies

Crowdsourcing

Crowdsource companies are essentially looking for people who can test remotely from their own locations, and often don’t require any experience. You can gain experience from doing crowdsource testing, and eventually, it’s a good thing to have on your CV.

Courses that offer positioning

Just make sure you pay attention to the exact offer, some of the course out there promise you a position but with fine prints.

Internships

An internship is great for gaining experience and understanding how the testing industry works; you might not get a high amount of money (if any), but you do get to see how testing is done in a company.

Friends and family

A friend or a family member that can give you a lift in the industry. This is a great way to get into the industry.

Knock on doors – literally

You can always go from door to door and ask if testers are needed. You can never know what opportunities you can find out there.
